The level of need on Martha’s Vineyard cannot be overstated, despite the Island’s reputation to the “outside world” of wealth and prosperity.

The families who apply for Red Stocking for their children often have multiple jobs with both parents contributing towards the family's finances. Many are seasonal workers.

Dukes County is one of the most expensive places to live in Massachusetts and very often income does not keep pace with necessities such as rent, utilities, food, etc.

  • Housing is extremely expensive, and indeed, homelessness exists (source: datausa.io)

  • Approximately 100 individuals and/or families are homeless on Martha’s Vineyard.

  • Martha’s Vineyard has a 20 percent higher cost of living than the rest of the state, and Dukes County is one of the poorest counties in Massachusetts, based on income per person.

As we look to the 2023 season of Red Stocking we are anticipating those who will need our help will increase. The reality of the housing crisis and inflation has taken its toll on our most vulnerable and hardworking Islanders.
